As the author of many articles written strictly on the topic of maintaining good brain health (1), I could not overlook the question of how useful it is for brain health to maintain a healthy diet combined with powerful supplements (2).

By the time you finish reading this article, you will gain precious knowledge that will help you maintain good health of your brain down the road.

Diet Is the Key to Fixing Many Problems

Diet Is the Key to Fixing Many Problems

It is no secret to anybody that when one sticks to a well-balanced diet (3), then he is more likely to face only beneficial results in return.

I know it is a cliche, but we are what we eat.

However, we must not lose sight of the fact that the diet influences the health (4) of our brains in direct proportion.

When one adheres to a vigorous regime and a healthy diet, then he is more likely to improve his overall brain health (5), develop cognitive and mental functions, enhance memory, and so forth.

At the same time, consuming harmful products can be as dangerous to your brain as it is for your body.

When it comes to side effects on one’s body, which are caused by the poor diet (6), it turns out that the most significant and latent problem is that the most people do not take into consideration the fact that the poor diet has its adverse affection on their brains.

The reason for this is that our bodies tend to react immediately to the absorption of harmful foods by us.
The reaction can be both external and internal.

The external reaction can manifest itself through the expansion of one’s waistline, an appearance of acne, accumulating subcutaneous fat, etcetera.

Most frequently, our bodies’ external reaction becomes evident almost instantly.

For this particular reason, the vast majority of people tend to think that poor diet results in one’s appearance in the first place.

However, this is not entirely true.

At the very first place, the habit of a poor diet affects our bodies inside, which results in high blood pressure (7), high cholesterol level and atherosclerosis, which for its part can lead to the reduced brain function.

As a result, all the external reactions result from the internal reactions and act as a consequence, not the primary cause.

To help you eliminate all the adverse reactions in your body, thereby preventing your brain from its sudden corruption, here is the list of the worst products for the brain you should exclude from your daily shopping list:

Sugary Drinks Are No Good

Sugary Drinks

Drinks that contain added sugars include beverages such as seltzer, soda, various energy drinks, fruit juices, and so forth.

When one drinks such beverages in abundance, he is more likely to experience an adverse effect on his brain.

Also, it has been proven that an abundant intake of sugary drinks might lead to the increase in the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (8).

What is more, when the blood contains a high level of sugar in it, one faces the danger of an increase in the long-term risk of developing dementia.

Many studies on animals have revealed that a high intake of fructose can lead to insulin resistance in one’s brain, a reduction in brain function, memory, learning, and the formation of brain neurons (9).

Refined Carbohydrates

Refined Carbohydrates

Sugar and highly proceeded grains contain refined carbohydrates in their structure.

Products that contain refined carbs have been found to impair brain function.

Multiple pieces of research have revealed that just a single meal, which contains a high amount of refined carbohydrates can impair memory in both adults and little ones.

Such an effect on memory may occur owing to inflammation of the hippocampus, which is a part of the brain that affects some aspects of memory.

Inflammation is generally known as a risk factor, which causes degenerative diseases of one’s brain, including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Highly Processed Products

Highly Processed Products

Generally speaking, highly processed foods are abundant in sugar, fats, and sodium.

The most well-known and widespread highly processed products include foods such as chips from the snacks’ family, sweets, instant noodles, microwave popcorn, and various kinds of ready-to-eat meals.

Highly processed products are ordinarily rich in calories and low in other nutrients the human’s brain needs to maintain its proper function.

Such foods are precisely the kinds of products that serve as the leading causes of the weight gain, which undeniably can hurt your brain’s health (10).

There was one study, where 52 people participated.

As a result, it has been proven that when people stick to a diet, which is high in harmful ingredients, then they are more likely to have lower levels of sugar metabolism in their brains.

Also, they might experience a decrease in brain tissue.

Interestingly, these factors are considered to be the main preconditions for Alzheimer’s disease.

So, What About the Healthy Food?

Diet or Pills?

There was a reason why I started writing this article by primarily listing the harmful foods for one’s brain rather than the healthy ones.

The primary purpose for that lies in the fact that a list of healthy products for one’s brain is considerably longer when compared to a list containing harmful foods for one’s brain’s health.

The truth is that it is pretty accessible and affordable to eat healthily.

The main reason why people do not do it is for the marketing spoils them.

Of course, it is easier to snack on chips or reheat the already-prepared meal, but the desire of having a functional brain should include some time investment.

If you want to have a healthy brain, then you should consider eating more of fresh food, fruits, vegetables, nuts as a source of fat, meat, and seafood.

Interestingly enough, it has been proven that a Mediterranean cuisine diet preserves the sudden cognitive decline.

So, Diet or Pills?

Brain’s Best Friend

Well, now as we spoke about the dieting, let’s move on to the realm of supplements.

So, diet or pills?

Who is your brain’s best friend?

Honestly, I think that such a formulation of the question is absurd.

Do not get me wrong.

I take the brain supplements myself to maintain a healthy and steady function of my brain.

However, I always take into consideration that any supplement or drug is an addition to a whole routine, not the primary attribute.

Most supplements are the tools that stimulate your body to produce the natural chemicals your body produces by itself.

However, the main difference is that your body would never be able to produce the needed amount of those chemicals by itself.

For this reason, the intake of nootropic supplements is the most beneficial and safe way to treat one’s brain’s health.

From here, one cannot merely rely on a supplement he purchased and keep eating unhealthily expecting that he is going to boost his brain’s activity dramatically.

In this case, this individual will merely wash his money down the drain without achieving any results.

At the same time, if one sticks to a healthy diet and takes a nootropic supplement, then he is undoubtfully going to achieve the desired result significantly faster in comparison to a situation when he does not take any supplements at all.

That being said, when used wisely, supplements are going to help you reach the level of brilliance you could never reach naturally.

In my opinion, it is always best to use supplements, which mainly consist of natural ingredients.

I wrote an article titled “Top 5 Brain Supplements, (11)” which you can read on this website to get a comprehensive understanding of what supplement fits you the best.

Well, now after I provided you with all the information in your brain’s health regard, it is up to you whether you should make a change and live a life of significance.
