There are many protective elements that perform different functions inside the brain.
One of such mechanisms is the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
It is positioned between the brain cells and blood vessels coupled with other components that form part of the brain tissues.
Although other protective tools are necessary for keeping the brain safe from physical harm, the BBB is known for other properties.
It protects the brain from toxic substances that cause the symptoms of brain infection.
Different cells inside this barrier perform different functions, for example, to determine how selective the barrier can be.
So, why is it important?
The major purpose of BBB is to protect our brain from pathogenic substances and other dangerous agents that could possibly provoke diseases.
However, its other role is to allow essential and useful substances as well as oxygen to get into the brain and maintain the proper levels of hormones and water inside the brain, because their changes may interfere with the smooth flow of brain processes.
Where is the blood-brain barrier located?
This barrier represents a special layer of membranes that are located in the blood capillaries inside the brain.
However, there are areas where the BBB is not present.
These include such areas as postrema, which is responsible for identifying toxic components in the blood and giving warnings about them.
The pituitary gland is also free from BBB as it has other means of passing information to the brain.
